168th Infantry Regiment

Special Report, Siegfried Maurer168th Inf Regt
My father, Siegfried Maurer, was a squad leader of the Wehrmacht; 131 Infantry Regiment, 44. Infantry Division "Reichsgrenadierdivision Hoch- und Deutschmeister". On 30 January 1944 he was taken prisoner by the Red Bulls near Caira, north of Cassino.
He wanted to get his squad together in the very front line but found empty foxholes; during this time the front was moving north. When he tried to get back to his unit, soldiers of the 34th met him near a kind of a little farm. He saw American helmets appearing from behind a wall: "Hands up", etc. A photo of my grandmother was shown around, then given back to him.
He is still living and in good health. My dad often told me how well and fairly he was treated by the American soldiers during the whole time of being a POW. Those first minutes it must have been especially strange, knowing that he was now in the hands of the "enemy". But you gave him from the first moment a feeling of being safe, a realization that the war was over for him.
I wish to thank you for treating my father well. Perhaps someone remembers that situation or has some pictures taken near Monte Cassino.
[Looking at Homer Ankrum's book, our unit was likely 168th Inf Regt, 3rd Bn, K Co.]

On 4 Feb 44, G Company was in a defensive position near Cassino, enemy action was stubborn and their lines were well-formed. 3rd Platoon G Company was on patrol to locate enemy machine gun and mortar positions that were holding up an attack. At about 2000 hours the patrol contacted a strong enemy patrol and were subjected to heavy machine gun and rifle fire. The patrol dispersed and returned fire, but the enemy brought up reserve elements and surrounded them. Only six men returned from that patrol and it is the belief of these men that the remainder were captured.
